Christmas / New Year rides

by Eleri
There is no official club bunch ride on Christmas Day or New Year's Day.

However, I'm still planning to ride most days and anyone who wants to join me is more than welcome. This are not official club rides or anything but always better to ride with company. Please let me know if you want to come along.

Tuesday 27th - RNP, Audley in, Waterfall out. I'll be leaving Marrickville Road Cafe at 6.30am.

I'll be heading over to the northside one day too or maybe a couple - happy to take suggestions on where and when.

I'm in. For everything.

Except anything early on the 29th - Ted's birthday the day before.

Also in..... I'm keen to pedal off the Xmas over indulgence. See you at 6.30am on Tuesday 27th for a scenic ride through RNP.

Let me know your plan's for the rest of the week as I am on leave until 3 January and keen for further rides - pending family commitments.

27th: what's' with the Audley in bit? I never wanted to try to ride up that hill, ever. I'll still probably come along though. You'll have to wait for me while I walk up though.

EDIT #2: 2nd Jan: Drive-Ride-Swim-Eat. Narrabeen-McCarrs Ck-Akuna Bay-West Head-Narrabeen. 70k's. 1k of climbing. Have to see if anything is open for breakfast. Ready to leave Narrabeen by 7.00am. Park near here on the street (it's free).

I will be in for rides on Boxing day, 1st, and 2nd, but in between that I have those Christmas carnivals.

Eleri - aren't you going in the Christmas Carnivals? They are more fun than anything else.

ah sorry Lizanne, I'm not as hardcore as you, and I freely admit it and am totally comfortable with my own limitations - so knock yourself out to do both rides, I'll be sleeping in zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

So here's the ride map for the 1st. It's on. I guess you could ride there and back too. Jo & I will be driving. Allow at least 45 mins to drive from Inner West plus 10 mins setup time. So really, you need to leave at 6:00am. For NYE Nana's only I guess. http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/61155230/

Can I just go to a couple of them? I forget how to ride my track bike though so better practice some time. Oh look - it's raining!!

At least enter one, the Tempe one, which will probably be run at Dunc due to rain. They really are fun, and the experience will be good for you. I am only entering 3. You will probably have to pay a late fee though :(

Note: This ride will now be on Mon 2nd Jan in the hope of getting a few more riders along. Also there is a Xmas carnival on 31st Dec at Dunc so some riders may be a little tuckered out on the 1st (plus I understand that some younger people go out on NYE and stay up late). Same start location in Narrabeen - Park near here on the street (it's free). Same start time - please be ready to ride out at 7:00am.

Here's a summary of what I think is happening (this includes a couple of rides not previously mentioned)

Boxing Day 26th - Eastern suburbs ramble through Watsons Bay and then along the coast to perhaps Maroubra or somewhere, back to our place for Christmas cake. 6.30am start at Marrickville

Tuesday 27th - RNP ride. 6.30am start at Marrickville

Friday 30th - Daddy Gorges ride - this is a 200km ride over on the north side that we need to find the map for. We'll leave from Hornsby at 6.30 am (open to negotiation on this.)

Monday 2nd Jan - Northside ride meet at Narrabeen at 7am. Park near here on the street (it's free). or ride out from Marrickville.

I'm up for all of these rides. However, if the ride on the 26th and 27th are both long rides then I'll chose one of those, does anyone have any idea how long these rides are?? Also what's the speed that you guys will go at?? if its about 28s then it'll b ok

Re: Christmas / New Year rides

Tony, from my estimates, the 26th would be around 50km but quite hilly, and the 27th round trip should be around 100km, if you ride home instead of taking the train. Marrickville-RNP Helensburgh exit-Marrickville is around 135km from memory.

Mon 2nd is NSW public holiday.
Warning. Monday 2nd January is likely to be a crap day on the roads (that's the official term).

I'm not saying don't ride, just expect higher than normal levels of traffic.

It's worth checking the elevation on this one. 200km, 3700m climbing. Not for the feint-hearted. Or fixies. That said the climbs are spread out over 8 hills and could be a lot worse. I'm certainly coming!

I'm in for the 26th and 27th! I thought I had to work on the 27th. Thank goodness for public holidays!

Eleri, what will the route be on the 26th please? I'll be at mum and dads in Bondi Junction so would prefer to join you en route.

Oh I don't know! It's a ride I'm going on and I haven't invented it and won't be routing it. It's an informal ride. :)

Probably over to Watsons Bay via Centennial Park. We could pick you up there at about 6.50 or 7am. We could take the Gates that I don't know the name of that aren't the Paddington Gates but are the next ones round at the top of that hill.

Sounds good! I have no idea what gates you are talking about... Are they the ones on Moore Park Road at the Bondi Junction end? The ones you use to go to the Moonlight Cinema? If so, great! I can be there by 645. 8)

Just so there is a common level of understanding here - these are not formal club rides, I'm just going on these rides (with the exception of the 2nd Jan because I'm doing something else) and inviting others to come along. I can ride at 28s to Waterfall quite comfortably. Don't feel constrained by that though and go off and do your own thing if you are faster.
Any details on the boxing day one? I'm interested but a newb and I don't want to get myself into something that I can't do or slow the group down.
All good, Andrew and I have communicated and he's coming along.
I'm up for all of these rides. However, if the ride on the 26th and 27th are both long rides then I'll chose one of those, does anyone have any idea how long these rides are?? Also what's the speed that you guys will go at?? if its about 28s then it'll b ok
I'm envisaging the 26th as a kind of recovery ride and sort of social. It will be about 50kms as Rhys suggests. Haven't worked out a route and was planning to make it up on the day.

The 27th will be about 28s speed, although we might not actually achieve that average given the amount of up hills. I'll wait for anyone who is slower than me at the top of the hills. If you are faster than me, go for it!

The ride on the 2nd can go ahead if you make it go ahead. All those interested can still attend, I just won't be there to lead the ride and navigate. I understand that Mark Lacey is going (he's riding out to Narrabeen) and he knows the route well but is pretty fast so you'd be better to be prepared. Here's a link to a Garmin upload of the route. Its not that hard to find the way as there's mostly only one road and on the return from Mona Vale you can choose to just follow Pittwater Rd, although there's lots more traffic.

I'd suggest you put up the usual post saying you are going and the time, starting point etc, putting down your name and get others to then copy / paste if they are attending.

Thur 29th: Jo & I will be riding. We'll be driving to Centennial Park and then doing an Eastern Suburbs via Watson's Bay loop (just subtract the riding to and from CP from that map :) ). Probably start at the park at 6:30.

So, to summarise the upcoming rides. NOTE: these are not official DHBC club rides (except for the 31st). Ride at your own risk.

Thur Dec 29th: Centennial Park to Watson's Bay & return via the beaches. Meet at York Rd gates at EDIT 07:00 - start time modified at 22:33 on 28th (we're nana's and we're tired).
Sat 31st Dec: Slowies ride as usual. 06:30 at the cafe.
Sun Jan 1st: Waterfall. C27. 7.00am at the cafe. Note later start time.
Mon Jan 2nd: Narrabeen-Akuna Bay-West Head-Narrabeen - be ready to ride at Narrabeen at 07:00. Edit: Ride Leader: Mark Lacey

Hi Andrew,

My Boxing Day av was 24.3kph and l envisage that the Akuna Bay ride will av near 27kph. However, as there are proportionately more flatter bits, the intensity would be near that of the Boxing Day ride. You can suck a wheel and save some energy
The key is to climb at your own pace and not blow up.
There will be a coffee stop at Church Pt, Mona Vale or Narrabeen on the way back. We can do a stop on the way out if we need to :D

For those who are worried about being dropped in Akuna Bay - I'm the worst climber in the world, and it's not so bad.
There are also worse places to be dropped, and the slower you go the prettier the scenery is :) One of the best rides to do in Sydney.

Well I will be there in the morrow 6am! I am a bit worried about getting dropped but we'll see. If we get dropped together Andrew I'll split a cab with you back home ;)

Haha sounds like a plan, it's looking to be a lovely day weather wise anyway so I'd be kicking myself if I didn't give it a go.
