In search of hills

I'll be doing this ride as part of my looming training plan for the ACE 250. Camilla will no doubt be joining me? Anyone else keen?
A few of us did this last year.

Looking for a good training ride for the Alpine Classic or just to get some riding in before the Christmas festivities? Yes, Xmas is not that far away!

This ride is an annual fixture on the Sydney Audax calendar with entrants regularly numbering 50-60 riders.

Two course distances are offered; the “traditional” 200km course and the “short” course 150km option.

Tempted, looks like a good route.

Also for those who are not sure on their ability to finish it, the route makes bail out a realistic option.

And for the insane, its 33k between Marrickville and Hornsby

The Audax version of "In Search of Flat to Gently undulating..." would probably involve riding to Perth into a roaring headwind non stop in mid Summer

Oh, I remember this from last year. the 200km ride that turned into a 250km when my gear cable broke on the way back from west-head. Assuming I don't have any child caring clashes, I'll be there.

Btw: Is there any chance I could get a lift to the start?

yeah we did. From memory there only one train we could get to get there by 6:15am. With some of the Summer Audax rides that start at 6am I've pretty much found it impossible to get there by PT. Of courses there is always the hard core option of riding to the start!

Well it starts at 6.30am (last year I think it started at 6 which is much harder to do public transport) and registration by 6.15. There's two train options we can catch:

Option 1 - Just in the nick of time
Take the Newcastle and Central Coast train (CityRail)
Dep: 5:45am Central Station Platform 9, Sydney
Arr: 6:22am Hornsby Station Platform 5

Option 2 - time to stuff around.
Take the North Shore and Western train (CityRail)
Dep: 5:09am Central Station Platform 16, Sydney
Arr: 6:01am Hornsby Station Platform 2

Since the Alpine Classic is demanding some training, I'm in. I'd opt for the stuff around option 2 despite the half hour or so earlier start. Do we have any moderate 28s style riders who are interested to keep me company through the slower darker moments of the ride?

It's about an hours ride if you go straight up the hwy from North Sydney.

Unfortunately i'm looking like a non-started. Got Eddy that weekend... Hopefully I'll get another chance latter in the month.

Because I can't do "in Search of Hills" I'm thinking of doing a Audax Gorge ride this Sunday (nov 26) instead. Either Mummy (150km) or Daddy (200km):

Don't much like the start time, but the rest looks fun. And I've got my bike back so won't have to do it on the fixie!

Choppo and I are going to do this fixed. Got a gearing problem at the moment, I'm stuck in 82.9", though I can get it down to 81". With a bit of luck I'll have some new wheels by then

Actually it's on Saturday - I'd have to take the Saturday Slowies. And they would have to start at 4.30am or something. Sounds unlikely.

After a failed attempt to get more clearance by changing the 49 to a 48, I used a half link. However I've left the 48 on, so my gearing has dropped again, I'm guessing that's 74 or 75", can't find the DHBC gear chart, where is it?

Crap frame that old Fuji frame the drop out is in the wrong spot (note the problem doesn't appear on Alex D's frame so the must of fixed the problem on the newer ones). Wouldn't mind a new fixie frame

Rain meant that some did not complete their nominated distances while others decided to ride thru the rain.

Unfortunately Rob Berry, who lives in Dulwich Hill but is not a member of the club came off at West Head suffering concussion and possible a broken collarbone & thumb.

I think he means Adam and I DNF - it was dark and drenching rain at the top of Bobbin Head and we couldn't see a thing and no-one driving could see us. So we bailed at that point, with no clue if the rain was ever going to clear. Neither of us were fancying going down some steep descents in the rain. Oh well, next week.

I was fortunate enough to only be about 1k from Pie in the Sky when it bucketed down. There I met a number of riders who were on their way back from Mt White and they talked me out of quitting, but I did ride in light rain for the next 2 hours, so wasn't so crash hot.
