Would anyone be interested in the Ride to Conquer Cancer on October 12th and 13th, 2012?

It's not for another 12 months but looks to be good fun. It's 200km over 2 days and the event will set up tents to stay in overnight as well as cater for meals etc. Expensive you might think? No, only $50.00. However, you do have to commit to raising at least $2,500 each for the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse at RPA.

If there is any interest perhaps we can set up a Dulwich Hill team. Plenty of time to fundraise.

Jo

Andrew our leading Gongride fundraiser has already registered. I am kicking it around however it will coincide with my daughter's 7th birthday and there could possibly be a backlash from the electorate if Daddy isnt present for the presents.

Hi Jo I have pre-registered my interest and am still to decide whether to ride. The more I think about it I believe I can raise $2,500 in 12 months. I am tossing around some fund raising ideas for work and donating the proceeds from the sale of some unwanted goods on eBay as ideas.

I keep reminding myself that I just need 25 people to donate $100. People tend to be willing to donate to cancer research etc. due to its widespread impact. I have added incentive as my mother in law is currently undergoing chemotherapy for cancer so I will get motivation and support from my extended family.

Sounds like I have convinced myself to register!.

Having done fund raising for events in the past, the simple rule is to ask everyone (and I mean everyone). Most people don't say no, and you may only get $5-$10 out of most people, but it all adds up.

You're right about cancer charities, cancer is such a widespread disease and because of that it has affected so many people (either directly or indirectly) that it is quite easy to get money for.

The Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club has been registered. In the next couple of days I'll try and update the page with some recent photos and some more personalised information about the club.

Todd, go ahead and join! Dougie, if the website allows it, it would be great for Andrew (and yourself) to join the team aswell.

There is nearly 12 months to fundraise so it would be great to see a few more members from Dulwich Hill sign up. It looks like a lot of fun (and did I mention they erect the tent for you and cater all meals?!) and is for a great cause.

For those unable to do it, any donations would be appreciated! They are tax deductible and go towards the Chris O'Brien LifeHouse at the RPA.

Hi All,

Thanks to Dougie joining the team, and his amazing fundraising efforts, the Dulwich Hill team total is looking pretty healthy. If anyone else has already registered and would like to join the team you can find it under Dulwich Hill Bicycle Club.

For those unable to do it, any donations would be appreciated. They are tax deductible and go towards the Chris O'Brien LifeHouse at the RPA.

Paulette, if you could PM me your details so we can arrange the day?

Hi Jo,

would you know how to join the DHBC team, if already registered with conquer Cancer ride as an individual participant?

I have found the DHBC team, but when i click on join, it assumes and tries to register me from scratch with the Conquer Cancer ride.

I have also written to the ConquerCancer guys and still waiting for their response.

I'll be there too. Riding with my Dad and a small team. Will catch you all there. Will need to coordinate to meet at the camp for a rehydration session (if there are any pubs in the vicinity).

Hi all DHBC members,

As you may know a number of us are participating in a very worthy cancer fundraising cause The SunSuper Ride to Conquer Cancer, a 2 day 200km cycling ride, benefiting the Royal Price Alfred Hospital. The event is held on 13th-14th Oct 2012.

Jo has registered the Team DHBC for the SunSuper Ride to Conquer Cancer. The DHBC team currently comprises of Joanna Skinner, Douglas Kirkham, Timothy McAleer and myself Bill Kokas.
Additionally the following have also committed to this fundraising event, Tod511, GregPankhurst, Nozzle.

As part of our commitment we individually have to raise a minimum of $2,500 each to participate in the event. Most are tracking well if not already exceeded their commitment, and others need a big helping hand and need support to get over the line.

There are a number of worthwhile causes and as we are in the new financial year it’s time for us to allocate our individual charity budgets, be it great or however small, it all makes a real difference.
If finances are tight, as we all know they are these days, consider a small gesture of forgoing say two coffees a week, or one less drink per week, over a period of one month or two. This will enable a nice little needed donation to a worthwhile charitable cause on your behalf. So secure yourself an early tax deduction.

On behalf of Joanna Skinner, Douglas Kirkham, Timothy McAleer, Tod511, GregPankhurst, Nozzle and myself Bill Kokas, we Thank You for your consideration and any donations that you may find yourself to make.

Apologies to any other DHBC members who have committed for Ride To Conquer Cancer and not mentioned here, as only going on information that’s based in this forum post.

Donation can be made here, just click on the individual name whom you want to assist in their fundraising efforts.

Happy and Safe Riding.
Bill K.

Few more details about the ride emerging. Starts @ Olympic Park, finishes at Onslow Park @ Camden, then back to Homebush the next day.

Guessing we're largely riding going to be riding the M7 bike path, but that's a guess on my part.

God knows what one will do between getting to Camden and nightfall. Even allowing for a cruisey pace and a 7.30am start. I reckon we'll have a solid 5-6 hours to kill?

Greg,

The Brisbane ride was a couple of weeks ago. It appears they had a 50K ride in the afternoon of Saturday to keep the boredom at bay. its either that or we hit the TAB at the Camden Hotel and slap $5 each way on the Dish Lickers at Mandura.

My concern is staying awake during sentry duty watching our bikes. I have nightmares turning up Sunday morning and finding an imprint and a thank you note where my S Works was the night before

Gee that sounds a little ominous. Might need to come up with a cunning plan of attack as to how we entertain ourselves

Think I read something about a secure area for bikes.

Hey Dougie,
Im guessing this is a free for all ride based on, "So bring along your friends and family and get ready to ride!"
So can just turn up.

I assume the numbers were for the breaky afterwards

Also i see you made the current roster as number 9 in the top ten fundraisers, well done.
does this mean you made the Polka Dot Jersey ?

Nice work Dougie... We've hit the $25K mark! Very impressive fundraising efforts. Oh, by the way, for some reason your personal donation has not registered and so your name does not come up as 'Personal Gift'. If that bothers you of course...

I won't be there Bill. I'll be doing some Eastern Suburbs hills on Saturday morning in preparation for another charity ride I have next weekend.

Welcome Marty! Our total has reached over $30,000 (nice work Dougie) and we have all achieved our minimum goal...

Dougie is well on track to get into the Top 10 fundraisers.

Don't forget you can choose your 'tent buddy'. Thankfully Paulette is also doing the ride (with her company) so I've found a friend.

A month to go today until the ride...

I'm looking for a tent buddy. I'll be riding in a team of three with my old man and his mate. If the DHBC team have odd numbers then I'm keen to share with a familiar face....

I don't snore but may not smell pretty after a day out on the bike....

Dougie, not sure your my type. Can't decide if I'm more worried about the baked beans or that you may break out the YMCA....

I'll be riding this Saturday morning to Waterfall with my Dad in preparation for the R2CC. Might also suit those foolish enough to be attending the Fitz's in a fortnight. Should be a relaxed ride but want to leave early to beat the traffic.

When: Saturday 6th October
Where: Marrickville to Waterfall
Meet: Marrickville Rd Cafe @ 6am
Pace: C28 ish

Let me know if you are in. Otherwise i'll see everyone on Sunday!!

Cheers,

Noel

For those participating in R2CC this Sat 13th, I assume have all seen the Day 1 morning schedule:

BREAKFAST AND GEAR DROP-OFF
- 5:30am - 6:30am Gear drop-off and breakfast.
- 5:30am - 6:30am Last minute Check-In begins.
- 6:15am All participants should be onsite.
- 6:30am Opening Ceremonies begin.

I intend to ride to Olympic park, via Cooks River track, leaving approx 4.45ish, depending on how slow the brain and legs are at that time. If anyone else intends riding same way, let us know.

Mildly annoying that the drop on Friday is homebush only and such a small window of time. Might email them to see if they can put together a CBD drop?

I'm probably going to ride out as well.

Was though thinking the Cooks River track is pretty damn dark come nightfall. Reckon we might be better off riding on the roads?

BTW if anyone is planning to go by train, be aware that there is trackwork on the city circle, and the trains are all over the place.

All done! I'll let Dougie write the report (he's good at that), but here are some photos... Keep an eye out for a post on the Ride to Conquer Cancer 2013!!

In summary, however, this was one of the most efficiently organised public events I've ever been on. The fact that it is the highest single fundraising event in Australia's history goes to show how much effort was put in...

I can echo Jo's words, what an amazing event, :!: not just being the amazing cause, but the organization, the facilities to cater for 1,600 riders(security bike parking, MASSIVE auditorium tent, toilets, hot showers, Dream lounge tent, Massage tent, Yoga Tent, Photo Tent, Food,or should i say FOOOOOOD!! cannot recall how many times we were fed, coffee machines, live bands(no comment ) and off course the bar, cold coronas to be had.
The amount of staff, crew, volunteers also out on the roads and signage directions, was super impressive. Not to mention the Harley club boys and the odd Duc at intersections guiding he way.

Did we mention we had a coupe of Ambassadors amongst us(Dougie & Jo). A media hog, who once she got in front of the media man & camera man proceeded to give a great interview...worked it... & on & on :)) (might be one of our ambassadors). Even one of those Fixie riders as well :)) Fantastic ride Jo, you'll kill the upcoming century.

We even had Noel and his family team(Hellen's Heroes)...make the big screen
WELL DONE THE HELEN'S HEROES TEAM.!!

http://youtu.be/r0A91oulNYY

Cut!!...can you roll down, go back and ride up the hill again ...(in house joke  )

Also look forward to Dougie's commentary and other pics from other DHBC participants. :D

T'was indeed bloody good fun, exceptionally well run and a singularly brilliant cause.

Good showing from the DHBC set as well. I spent most of Saturday in tow with Jo and occasionally the incredible disappearing Bill, and the Sunday in tag with Doug, though saw plenty of Paulette, Tam and Noel over the course of the weekend.

Really need to get myself a club jersey.........
