Im checking out vids of Renshaw talking about this year, man I hope this year his headbutting is more succesful with the ref's. That lad is so nice! me and Simon met him at the grandprix in sydney after the race, and had a talk to him about his mum and racing RAW!

I cant wait to see some of these sprint stages go down!

Heinrich Haussler any one? http://www.heinrich-haussler.de/english.php

Tonights opening stage should a good one. It looks like it should bring out the climbers and I'm going to go with either Samuel Sanchez if the climbers hit out or Mattie Goss if it is not quite a climbers finish and the sprinters remain, for the win!!

@Camilla - Jo is excited (as am I), but it's early days. Cadel deserves some good luck for a change but I think that Schleck & Cheatador (trademark registered to Julian) are still the fav's.

I like it heaps more with the eagle paint job.

Hey what was with Contador having a different brand helmet? and is it true that when he was riding for Astana that he had to provide his own wheels?

Re: 2011 Tour De France Chat thread.

Posted: 05 Jul 2011, 14:45
by Stuart
@Tim - Cadel also has a different helmet to the rest of BMC - personal sponsors I guess. There was also some twitter chat about how the BMC TTT bikes may not be production (they look pretty 'rough') and may therefore not be legal, but that the UCI were only concerned about seat position ... but it could be BS of course. is there a rule around prototypes in cycling? I didn't think so. It's not like 'production' or even Superbike motorcycle racing where you have to build and sell a certain amount of bikes before you can race them.

Fairly boring stage 3 - surprised that Cav & Thor were relegated for that little bit of purse throwing at the intermediate sprint - the UCI is being pretty harsh - it was nothing IMO. Cav was definitely not pleased if his twitter stream was anything to go by and apparently Thor said he'd take all the blame but the UCI ignored him.

Final sprint was great to see a different sprinter and team get a stage victory - Garmin are on fire it seems and that's a good thing for us spectators. Renshaw has said that HTC blew it in that he got them to ride on the front too soon.

Should be an interesting night tonight.

Haha yeah I love that photo Stuart! There's a (very) brief moment where you feel sorry for Contador, then the fist pumping for Cadel takes over! I just put it as the screen saver for my computer....

By the way, last nights stage was so awesome to watch! If you heard the interview of Cavendish after the finish, he made some comments about how the race organisers have changed the sprint rules to 'handicap' (quote) him and hist team? He said that the new rules mean that there are no more bunch sprints? Could someone please explain what he means?

And he supposedly maxed out at 175 as well! I was really surprised by how low those numbers were. I know that my heartrate at threshold can vary by as much as 20 bpm depending on how fatigued I am but this early in the race I wouldn't have (of) expected the riders to be that tired. I'm guessing you're right, they're ridiculously fit and Flecha had another 20 bpm or so to give to be truly maxed out.

Yeah, Goss needed another 5 or so metres of road. Still, nice for Sky to finally get a win and with the rumours suggesting strongly that Cav will be in black next year the other Sky sprinters need to stake a claim!

Man, the carnage just keeps on coming and now the bog GC guys are at 2.30 ... pity that huge crash happened and I'll miss Vino, even though he should have been banned for life like all drug cheats.

The Hoogerland incident though, this is an outrage following the motorcycle incident. They should be charged, not just thrown off the tour. Cancellara tweeted "Watch this. cyclingnews.com/tour-de-france/stage-9/photos/181772 Is this right...?? I feel so sorry for johny. This is a scandal what happen"

I agree

Johnny Hoogerland (Vacansoleil-DCM) extracts himself from the barbed wire fence he landed on after being taken out by a French television car.

Wow that's absolutely horrendous. That was one of the worst days in the history of the tour, winning the GC has become a war of attrition rather than ability. I think we are down to about 6 contenders as the rest have all broken bones or been concussed.

I wonder how much of it has been the fault of the organisers in picking a dangerous route? Or is it nerves? or just bad luck?

That photo of Hoogerland made my jaw drop. It's still on the floor. I was watching the carnage last night and saw all the worst bits live. Riders being fished out of the bushes, Vino's leg obviously not in the right spot, Van den Broek & Willems out of it on the side of the road. But that incident with the car was bordeline criminal. Just astonishing. I knew Hoogerland had been ripped up but the full extent of it didn't get shown last night. Not that I saw anyway. Funny thing is that I was slipping in and out of sleep. When I woke up this morning I honestly thought (& hoped) that I must have dreamt it all.

Yes, Clenbutador seems to have had steak for breakfast, lunch & dinner on the rest day (nod nod, wink wink, say no more). I agree though that at last things have come alive and the next stages will really be interesting. You'd have to think that Friday's stage will really suit Clenbutador & The Schlek's with such a short run before the Alpe d'Huez (although the Col du Télégraphe couldn't really be called easy).

Cuddles still in it - come on son.

But the ride of the tour so far for me has to be this man

Stage 17 was full of fun and games and great to see Cuddles lose no time to Clenbutador, even though the Spanish Mafia are all lining behind him (or in front, to give him a wheel to suck).

Or as cadel said: Afterwards, the Australian explained that he was on Andy Schleck's (Leopard Trek) wheel when Contador launched his move over the top of the climb. "I think Voeckler put in the first attack and then Contador went," Evans said. I got caught behind Andy and I just couldn't get around him. They [Contador and Sanchez] had a bit of a gap, but fortunately we were able to close it on the flat."

Also, big up to person who left the gate to the parking spot open on that bend where Voeckler went off road the 2nd time - would have been a bad way for him to exit the tour. And look, there's Thor coming to help him. No, wait, it's just some di*k head wearing a world champion's jersey ...

Image

Andy (and to a certain extent Frank) can't descend - that much is clear. he wants no more descending in the TdF - all mountain stages must only go up one Col or pass and must finish at the top. OK!!!

Here's today's photos

gutted. that's all I can say. Voeckler has gone from hero to zero in my books after refusing to do any work on the last climb to protect the yellow, along with all those other wheel suckers.

As usual, Cadel just doesn't have a good climber to help him in the mountains. Great, great ride from cuddles though - much respect. I expect that it will be Frank attacking tonight. Suppose it will be years before we get an Aussie winner of the tour. sigh.

Sending all my bad karma (and I've got heaps) to the Schlecks.

Pity the Foxtel box failed to actually record the stage so i don't get to see it (maybe there'll be a torrent soon). Great, excellent and gutsy ride from Cuddles. No matter the outcome, he is a legend of Aussie cycling. Oh, and great to see a Frenchman take a stage.

Stage Win Was Possible
BMC Racing Team Directeur Sportif John Lelangue said he and Evans discussed taking a "stage-winning" approach to pull back the 57 seconds the former world road champion needed to take the overall lead. "That way, we had no pressure about the jersey or the GC," Lelangue said. "We could have actually won the time trial because we were within two seconds of Tony Martin in the last downhill, but I didn't want him to take too many risks. I actually had to slow him down."

Not sure about bikes, but BMC were selling a whole heap of last years replica team kits at the Bike show yesterday. I couldn't resist either at $80 for the bibs and jersey.

Anyhow, what a great 3 weeks for Cadel and Aus cycling.

I find it interesting that BMC rode SLR01's for the entire tour, yet Cadel is holding an Impec up on that shot above. He also changed bikes back to his original one rather then ride the special yellow one for the final racing portion of the stage.

Yep and that Impec he is holding up is not even the one that he rode at the start of the stage. He rode the one that the old dude in the photo above it standing over on the left.
This way, when they auction the bikes off, they can say, "as ridden by Cadel Evans in the Tour de France."

Anyone else feeling the love a bit more from motorists on their commute? I got a smile, a wave and a thank you this morning from three seperate cars!

Don't think I will be buying a BMC kit. Sounds like they are on the road to becoming the next Giant.

I got two "Go Cadel" from pedestrians yesterday, so I would like to think that it will have a change in motorist attitudes.

I got one from a driver on Sunday. And there seems to be a few more cyclists around this week. Of course - that could also be the rain finally easing off...
