Hello,

As I have a work do in Canberra on Thursday July 23 I'm faintly considering continuing down to my farm in the Snowies for the rest of the weekend to do some cycling. I'd be arriving Friday 24 and leaving on the Monday. With the skiing traffic I'd probably avoid the Thredbo ride and opt for the Jindabyne/Dalgety/Berridale loop and a ride out along the Barry Way instead.

It's a long way to go for a weekend but if anyone fancies joining me I've got plenty of spares beds. And you're more than welcome to go skiing instead! Or just stay home and hang with the cows.

It's be a bit tricky but if you're feeling hard-core it's doable. It's a 6 hour drive from Sydney, 5 and a half if you don't stop. And you could always ride the Monday instead of the Saturday. We could do the big ride on Sunday.

I'd stay longer but I have to be back at work on Tuesday.

OK, I've been giving it some serious thought. I've decided that Stuart is probably right: we are nuts. It's not so much about the cold (I was not in my wildest dreams intending any pre-dawn starts) but the traffic. I've never ridden down there during the ski season and the more I think about it the more I'm convinced it will be too dangerous. The roads are great but narrow, and the drivers are insane in their quest to get to the snow/a warm shower. It's a long way to go for a couple of days without actually being able to do the best rides.

So, I'm going to cancel. But ........ drum roll ........... let's do it properly in summer. I'm thinking something like Jan 4-10. We'll have more time, the weather will be nice, more people will be able to make it and it'll be perfect timing for the Alpine Classic. I think.

Farm has beds for 11 (3 doubles, 5 singles, of wildly varying comfort levels) and plenty of space for people to put camp beds on the floor, or even camp.

Watch this space.

Teach you for procreating Simon! Amy, I've got you confirmed for one of the high-class beds (i.e. minus bats), and both the Marks too, whether they like it or not.

But Simon, surely a week camping in the country would appeal to the fam. We'd let you in for meals and the odd shower ...

Sounds like a much, much better option Camilla (still, I think the cold would be the biggest issue although I agree the traffic would be hideous too) but Jo & I would only be able to make the weekend piece due to us having used all our holidays and then some on 10 weeks in France over the last two years. Will be starters for the weekend though but need a guaranteed quality bed .... or maybe we'll camp under those five stars Jo keeps on about.
