the 2012 Lionel Cox Memorial Sprint Derby has been provisionally set for 4pm Saturday April 21!



It's time to dust off the squat rack







and bust out your guns!






Racing will commence with a flying 200m TT to rank riders from fastest to slowest. Riders will then be pitted against other riders of a similar speed in a tournament style 1 on 1 match sprint. Everyone with a 2012 racing license is welcome to ride.


For those without much/any track experience this is a perfect event to have a go at;

1. you don't have to contend with lots of riders on the track
2. the worst result you can get in any race is second
3. you will be riding against other riders of similar speed/experience
4. you don't have to keep track of a million laps or points scores etc.

And when you thought it couldn't get any better, racing will conclude with a masterchef quality BBQ consisting of white bread, onion, sausage, and sauce of your choice (as long as your choice is bbq or tomato)!

Btw, where did you find that motor bike? I just noticed it has two parallel twin engines bolted together, never seen that before.

I'm not sure when the last sprint event was - there was one at that council open day a year or so ago. But I'm not sure about before that. But I am sure that this one will be awesome fun.

Stuart's even looking to buy a flash track bike, so i recon he'll have it all set and ready to go for the omnium

That bike is "The Parasite", probably the third most famous double engined Triumph dragbike in history. And one of the earliest.

It was built in New Jersey and took two months to complete, in early 1959. It was very successful from the off, but broke many chains.

On one occasion, the rider went through the timing lights at the end of the quarter mile well before the bike, earning the headline "He Slid Down The Track In Smoking Leather Pants".

Best time over the quarter was 10.33 @ 151mph.

The relevant bicycle connection is that its' tiny fuel tank was made from two pushbike headlight shells welded together. And that the shop it came from was called Bauer Cycles.

It still exists.

As I don't have a track bike and have never ridden on the track, I won't be there to ride (we have people for lunch that day anyway). I hope it goes well and lots of people turn up.

Thanks Peter - good to learn a bt of triumph history. I'm currently riding around a tea plantation in India on a piece of history - a royal Enfield 350 when I am not pedalling. Too good.

Hey Patn - sounds awesome, I would so love to come to this and the ones Crafty has ran in the past were really great fun. I'm a bit pissed off we have a lunch on that day, but that is the way life goes . Stuart was even keen to come down and help be an official. We could have got him on a spreadsheet or some thing.

We have friends staying for the weekend and its a 50th celebration lunch ... by 4 I'll be having a nap.

haha i understand... big lunch and a glass of wine or two and im toast. the only way for me to stay up after a big lunch is to enjoy it with like 15 wines, in which case i would still be awake but definitely in no state to ride!

I've been meaning to give track riding a go and this sounds like fun but I don't have a track bike, would there be a loaner available?

yes...
but i'de recomend coming to the track on monday, and wednesday to get a bit of experence before you race.

if you want to race an omnium, it would possibly be better to turn up the the track for a training night at least once first! racing is a slight step up from just riding

I've been there twice but unfortunately both times were rained out, only got on the track one time for about 10 or 15 minutes before the rain came. Certainly looking to come along for more training, I just thought that this statement in the original post:

Indicated that it would be something riders new to the track could take part in because it would generally only be two people on the track at once. If that's not the case that's fine because I certainly don't want to cause an accident

oops I didn't read that, yeah I guess it is true :p possibly the match sprint is a good time, you don't need to be in a paceline. Just be careful going from standing to sitting in the flying 200 then I guess :p

I think what Tim, Lizanne and I mean to say is that as long as you are comfortable riding a fixed speed bike (i.e. dont stop pedalling after you finish sprinting!) and are comfortable enough being on the banking a bit then you will be fine. So compared to riding in things like scratch races, kierans, and madisons etc next weeks event would be perfect for people with little experience on the track. I probably shouldn't have so "no experience", that was a little bit of an exaggeration.

If you can get to Tempe tomorrow, or monday/wednesday next week just to get a feel for things you should be more than fine to ride in the sprint. It would be great to get as many people down there next week as we can!

I should be able to come along for this one. Might have to start riding a bigger gear than 92' in preperation.

I'll be there on 92inches now that we know the Swans play the next day, not at the same time. Looking forward to it.

So Pat are we on for Saturday? Any idea of numbers?

There are so many people competing I've lost track, and the numbers of spectators will be out of control. Heres hoping we don't have a stand collapse or something.

After reading some posts about gearing, I was thinking gear limits might make for more fun racing - like 80" or 85" or 90" or something. So winning races will rely more on tactics. But I'll leave that decision to the higher powers...

We already have an 81" omnium so it would be my (unbiased) opinion to let it ride.
Forecast is a late shower Saturday, fingers crossed they get it wrong.

... now is it 3pm get there for a 4pm start? or a 4pm get there for a 5pm start?

It's not meant to be like that, we are supposed to turn up at 4. The 1hr lag thing just happens due to the usual carnival atmosphere, late commers and discussions about what events should make up the ommnium

I had a great time too, thanks to all involved, but no thanks at all to the pizza 'delivery' person.

Yep a big thanks to James for doing all the organisation for Saturday. It was loads of fun. I can't quite decide which race was my favourite, so I'm making it a tie. They were (in no particular order)
1. anthony p kiloing rhys. What a corker, rhys looked gone for all money, but toughed it out and hung on. pham completely buried himself until ~120m to go where he just exploded and stopped dead on the track, and rhys came round him and pipped him with a couple metres to spare. Great race to watch and super gutsy.
2. The "who's sleeping on the couch?" race between lizanne and ben. the draw was doctored to make this race happen, and it didn't disappoint. the lead switched a number of times, lizanne looked like she might have the legs on the final straight, but ben took it out. lucky for ben or he may have been shamed into never coming down to the track again

big kudos to the mikalef boys from lacc (apologies if i have the spelling wrong). they both rode great flying 200 times, and entertained everyone with some brilliant 1on1 races.

the dark horse of the night was definitely justin - i can't remember seeing him on the track for ages, yet he showed up packing heat and pulled off some great wins.
