Crafty just posted this on the RAW forum:

Hi Guys

Some issues have arisen and at best the start of RAW will have to be delayed.
I apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your continued support

Looks like I'll be "tapering" for a few more weeks =P

25th June, RAW starts. Craft confirmed it only hours ago.

"The RAW Track season for 2010 will start on the Friday 25th of June.

As many are aware the later start is due to some issues that needed to be resolved before starting the season. The great news is that the contract has been secured for two more years. I would like to thank CNSW for their constant support throughout the process.

5 Divisions + Newbies

• Div 1- Serious “hard-core” top class athletes. This division hosts a number of Australian champions.
• Div 2- Only slightly easier. This division hosts some former and current Master World medallists.
• Div 3- Now we’re talking. This grade has fast racing for riders who race hard but train soft.
• Div 4- Love your racing but hate to train. This division is for those who are learning or those who just enjoy the fun.
• Div 5 –Too young, too new or just too slow. Bring it on.
• Novice/Div5- This is for first timers

Novice Grade
• Five years ago a novice grade was introduced and proved to be extremely successful.
• In fact we now have Australian Representatives who started track racing in Div 5
• Four years ago Kaarle McCullock did her first FNWTR race in Div 5 now she is duel UCI World Champion.
• Novice races are usually of a simple nature and are intended to be less competitive.
• Each night there will be 3 novice races
• Novice riders are not eligible to ride the round 5 combines
• Novice riders earn entry points but do not accumulate placing points towards the point score

See you at the track for week 1 of RAW soon. "

I'm tossing up between racing on Friday and resting my recovering injury. If I don't race then that's curtains for making the complete series.

I'm going. I am going in as many of the 3 novice races I can squeeze in before I have to take my wife dancing.

Does anyone know what a 'round 5 combine' actually is?

In the combined round the top riders from each grade ride with the bottom riders of the next grade up. So for example the top div 3 riders will ride with the bottom div 2 riders.

For Week 1
Friday, June 25 2010

Game on,
Bring it!

RAW TRACK Newsletter 2010 sponsored by:

The extended wait is finally over!
RAW Track series 9 starts this Friday the 25th of June. The first race is at 7:05pm with doors opening at 6pm.
Wipe the dust off the track bike, drizzle a little oil on the chain, put about 125+ PSI in the tyres and get your butt along to the DGV this Friday.

.

Week 1 Feature Race
The RAW Track 1km Wheel-race

• This weeks feature race will be the RAW Track 1km wheel-race
• Riders finishing in the top 3 of the warm up scratch race from Div 1-4 will qualify for a 12 up wheel-race.
• Trinkets + Cash prize

First week’s Program
• Round 1 warm up Scratch
Round 2 The RAW Track wheel-race
• Round 3 sprint (4up’s over two laps)

• Round 4 Winner’s Race
• Round 5 Combines

Blue indicates Series Points scoring rounds

Explain these races
Sprint- RAW Track sprints are usually run as 4-6 ups over 3 laps (2 laps this week) the first few laps are usually spent sizing your opponents up and positioning yourself for the optimum explosion to the finish. It is not uncommon for a sneaky rider to attack early in the hope of holding a lead to the finish. The sprint is a test of power, speed and above all, tactics.
Winners Race- The race is over 16 laps. There is a sprint with 12laps to-go, the winner of this sprint qualifies for the final sprint, however he/she must continue to race, keeping a close eye on the winners of the sprints with 9, 6 and 3 Laps to go. Each of these riders also qualifies for the final sprint. With 4 laps to go all non-qualifying riders must withdraw from the race. Leaving a 4 up sprint to decide the final placing. You can work out all the tactics on this one.

Points for 2010 series starts week 1
• For every week you attend you receive 10 points
• In rounds 3,and 4 top 4 place getters receive 5,3,2 and 1point respectively
• From Week 10 August 27 place getter points are doubled.

• It will start week 2 July and will run every 2nd week.

I wish we had some numbers in there, because it would show that for the last time this year, im topping the DHBC A grade riders :D
I turned up wanting to ride c grade, haveing had three weeks off a bike, then doing 5 sepperate heart rates during the week as prep! no time on a real bike! the warm up on the night left me with really sore legs :D but i loved every minute of racing that i was in! just sitting in with those fast lads is trippy, and id forgotten how much i loved riding my bike! (if i was in the sprinting form i was at the sprint series, i would have won though :( but yes :D any one thinking about racing should totally go for it! i was totally smiling for over a day after this!

That's a good story. It reminds me of a girlfriend i had once. Our dog went missing and she blamed me because I hadn't mended the fence. I went looking for it every chance I got, but couldn't find it. In the meantime our relationship deteriorated and then the girlfriend went missing. Some time later I discovered that she'd actually moved the dog to her new boyfriend's house to create a conflict scenario. Girls are from Venus. I miss the dog.

A very humorous read, just a shame that it actually happened to someone.

I wanted 13 so I could wear it upside down, but Nosh Mistry had it, so I got 112. Who knows what 112 is?
<nerdy maths stuff>
112 is 4 lots of 28, and 28 is a perfect number.

So ... 112 is like perfect, but 4 times better.
</nerdy maths stuff>

To be totally fair.....I definately I jumped the gun!! There is no way I would be that close to the finish against Lise Benjamin without some kind of advantage.

It was good fun in Div 4. I especially liked the combine div 4 / 5 - at one stage there could have been a a DHBC finish for 1, 2, and 3 between Julian, Rhys and me...bummer the guy in Pink got us. Justin was up there some where but pulled out in the last few laps.

My car is in the smash repairs (someone backed into it) and I get it back Friday afternoon, but won't have time to go pick up my track bike. Has someone got room for another bike this Friday? I'll be taking it home.

News and Information
For Series 9 2010
For Week 3
July 09 2010

Week 3 Bring it!

Feature Race

The A’qto 1.5km Wheel Race
• This week’s feature race will be the A’qto 1.5km wheel-race in Round 2
• Riders finishing in the top 3 of the warm up scratch race from Div 1-4 will qualify
• In the event of a division being split, the top two of each heat will qualify
• Handicaps:
• Div 1 = 0m
• Div 2 = 50m-60m
• Div 3 = 85m-95m
• Div 4 = 140-150m

This week’s Races
• Round 1 warm up Scratch
• Round 2 The A’qto 1.5km wheel-race
• Round 3 Kierins
• Round 4 Point score
• Round 5 combines

Explain these races
Kierin- The keirin is a motorpaced event that is very popular in Japan where it originated. In that country, huge amounts of money are bet on races and professional keirin riders command impressive salaries. It is similar to the match sprint, but features 6-8 riders on the track. A derny motorbike paces the riders from 25 km/h up to 45 km/h for the first few laps. During this time, riders jostle each other for the best position and this is often the roughest part of the event. With two and a half laps to go, the derny bike pulls off and the sprint is on. Team tactics are important here, as the leadout is often quite long. If one team can get two of their riders in the final, then they are at a distinct advantage.
Reference: http://www.cyclingnews.com

Point score- Riders must score points by sprinting for intermittent sprints every ?? laps for bonuses (5, 3, 2, 1 points). Lapping the field scores a bonus 20 points, consequently losing a lap to the field scores -20points. Winner of the race is the rider with the most points.
Junior Development will not run this week

Point Score info
Last week’s top scorers
• Div 1 Dave Stevens 20 Points
• Div 2 Phil Dixon 20 Points
• Div 3 Sam Rutherford 18 points
• Div 4 Peter Rox 17 points
• Div 5 J Stockwell + P Harvey 17 points

TWE Wheels Division leaders

• Div 1 Dave Stevens 40 points
• Div 2 Phil Dixon 38 points
• Div 3 Darryl Thorncraft 31 points
• Div 4 Henry Baird + Jared Mills 31 points
• Div 5 Paul Harvey 32points

Teams/Clubs Challenge

Dulwich Hill 628
Lidcombe 368
Illawarra 307
Bicisport 294
Sutherland 240
Randwick Botany 217
Waratah Vets 187
Southern cross 142
Penrith 128

The famous TWE mid-season Wheel-Race will be held week 6 (July 30 2010)
• The wheel-race rewards those who start the season strongly.
• The top 4 of each grade (div4-div1) at the completion of week 5 will qualify for the wheel-race
• each rider will be individually handicapped; any rider who I perceive to be sandbagging will be severely disadvantaged.
• First prize is a set of custom built TWE wheels.
These wheels will be professionally built by Greg Ryan to meet your specific requirements

In 2010- No series prize for winner of Div 5
• Div 5 was introduced to be a stepping stone to riding in a higher grade
• In the past, some riders have not progressed to a higher grade because they were highly ranked for the point series. Even though they had progressed in speed and ability.
• To return Div 5 to its intended purpose and encourage riders to step up, there will be no series prize for Div 5 in 2010
• Riders will continue to score points in Div 5 and can take them up to Div 4 (as per RAW Track Constitution)

Hey i reckon we need more pics of our club members in between races, one of the big differences between us and a lot of other clubs, is the way we sit together, cheer for each other, etc (there are people that do it, but i think we seem to do it more, and a lot of the others are just friends in general, not the same club)

Dave Stevens is an interesting character:

2007
Dave first turned up to FNWTR in 2007 and signed on in Div 2. It was the night of the Div 2 handicap and as I had never seen him before, I asked him how he went in the warm up scratch race, to which he replied “dead last” so I promptly gave him limit at 140m. You can view race here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti5bUWmb94U
After the race I spoke to Stevens again (less kindly) saying “you said you finished last in the scratch race!” He replied: “Yeah I punctured” This is the last we saw of Dave that year.

2008
Dave rode RAW a few times in Div 1 nothing to write home about. His name started to appear on crit results around the traps.

2009
RAW started week 1 with Stevens being the best rider on points. From there not much else happened until the end of the season where he started to kick a bit of butt. Dave dominated the NSW masters 3 Pursuit and Scratch race Championships

2010
Dave has been concentrating on Pursuits. Most of his training is done either on track or on ergo (very little on road). At the national titles, he won Gold in the point’s race and silver in pursuit.

Interestingly I am told Dave is in the top 100 earners in Australia. He owns Brennan IT, hence he can afford his little toys like the Porsche 4wd and the bike.

Great racing by Hugo last night! (slightly unlucky that a lad crashed behind you so none of us saw you cross the line)
I hope the young lad at the end is ok :S far out, the guy that was in the crash that crashed was looking bad from half a lap away! i was watching before crafty mentioned him, he was undertaking the whole field, nearly got taken out about ten times?! But there were a few dangerous looking riders?! i reckon the guy that came third in the wheel race was the worst! i noticed him in the warm up, then every race after that :S

Top 4 point scorers in Div 4 didn't show, so Vic, me, Nathan and Lise Benjamin were eligible to ride. I opted out knowing I barely survived the warm-up scratch, but the rest of the DHBC crew raced. Lise Benjamin led most of the way and got pipped by Div 1 at around the 2nd last turn - all she needed was one more strong rider to share a few laps - it was a good race....You could have been that rider Justin.

I think that maybe lise stuffed it up by not trying to do it with victoria, even if they did half a lap to every lap and a half, she may not have died in the end.

I wanted to be there, I had even invested in a (cheap) set of clinchers with higher pressure tyres (brace yourselves for the eye-sore). But the 10 minute ride home took me 20, I was in bed before the race started.
I was pleased to see Lise still made 4th. And well done to mr annoying in 2nd.

People told me to watch for a split, but I hadn't competed in a team race before and I my legs got the better of my brain... The following italian pursuit, i was reportedly allowed to close the gap and then drop back, but didn't hear a word Crafty said over the PA. Lessons learnt. (Sorry Parbs)

Perhaps my fault too, as we got off to a terrible start with my pulled foot and would have been up on the other team from the start if it wasn't for that.

No worries. Once Headturner swung off you accelerated very quickly rather than a steady build of pace and it took me by surprise. On the plus side I now have a new top speed on the track, but boy did that hurt trying in vain to close that gap back up.

Last week there was talk of going to a Pub for dinner / drinks after racing instead of Oportos. The place discussed was called "The Three Swallows" and is on Liverpool road heading back into the city. Here is the info if we decide to go there -
