Keith Oliver was the guy I was thinking of. I went out to the Clarence Street Cup a few months back (and saw DHBC colours proudly mount the podium). Keithy Oliver looked like the archetype of the skeaky, grumpy old track-rider; I was most taken by him! He must have 60+ years of experience.

I'd lvoe to be one of those sneaky, grumpy old bastards who gets the better of fitter, faster whipper-snappers on the track. All I lack is 40 years experience.

You're not the first person to express an ardent interest in riding directly behind me. At first I found it a little unnerving, to be honest, but then someone explained aerodynamics to me.

Well, I appreciate your words of encouragment, but shall nonetheless make discretion the better part of valour at the omnium.

I have no intention of doing anything than having a gentle potter-around on the track on Saturday. I find it very hard to envisage myself ever being anything but a hazard to others on a velodrome. Pigs will fly before I enter a race (this may lead to some anxiety as I peruse my copy of Genetic Engin...

Camilla is going to have a go tonight, so I can go along as support-person. While I generally agree with the principle that states you should get straight back on the horse that threw you, if I came down again on certain bits of me you would hear the scream in North Sydney.

"Death wobbles" was Lindsay's term, I believe. I don't know if this is orthodox cycling language, but it seemed to sum things up pretty accurately.

Omnium: advice for the complete novice

For anyone thinking of having a go on the track for the first time at the Omnium, there are quite a few things you need to know. I know a couple of them having been for the first time myself on Monday. All our seasoned track-riders can maybe add the rest. Getting on a track bike for the first time i...

Shower or two. A term that the Bureau of Meteorology seems to interpret quite widely. If it's a shower or two on Monday like the one that's currently falling in Camperdown, it will be pretty unpleasant riding.

Sorry, that sounded a bit pushy! But your MapMyRide thingy for the Southern Highlands was excellent. Whether you would be able to find a route that gives people like you and Mike a decent hit-out without killing me remains to be seen.

I'm the bloke who gormlessly, it seems, agreed to have Powerade sent to him. Looks like this guy at Hill and Knowlton has pulled stumps on this particular promotion.

I'd heard about those fiendish bots that run around automatically harvesting e-mail addresses. But if I was an advertising guy told to try to get a bit of low-level, word-of-mouth action happening, I guess I could come up with a few hundred e-mail addresses of sports cranks in an hour or two, just b...

Yep, I got one too. They must have farmed the forum for anyone who posted their e-mail address. Compared to all the crap one gets by phone and e-mail, this struck me as a gentle offer to send free stuff, which I could accept or ignore. I said what the heck, send me some free stuff if you really want...

Haven't seen you guys for ages. Camilla and I will probably accompany you to Sutherland, if the siren call of the bacon and egg rolls in Cronulla is not too strong. Whether I'll be able to keep up with you is another matter. Since I'm trying to win Torpedo7's French Alps tour and will have to go ove...

It was a gorgeous ride; our city can really turn it on at times. And for a thrill, you get to gaze at the complaisant burghers of Cronulla and wonder what darknesses lie in their hearts. Just don't blunder up to the counter for your bacon-and-egg roll, or you will be firmly (but politely) instructed...

Who aere you calling "Middle of the Road"? You had to rush home from Long Weekend Touring to catch the finale of So You Think You Can Dance.

Is the forum always like this? I only joined on Thursday, and productivity has plummeted since.

It's a bit odd. I had no idea that I'd almost been totalled by a tow-truck until I read the forum (although Timyone mentioned something on the road when we stopped later). I thought you guys had stopped at the accident site to see if you could render assistance, rather than to exchange unpleasantrie...

Bugger the alpine adventures! Moss Vale was already a bit too alpine for my tastes. The sunburnt splendour of the western tablelands sounds much better.

Top weekend's touring! Thanks Adrian for setting it all up. How can I feel as bright as a button after a couple of days in the saddle and quite a few big hills? Could virtue really have its own rewards?

PS This trip is highly recommended for aficionados of the noble bos taurus

Sorry, didn't think that the word panniers was likely to quicken anyone's pulse. Camilla used to have quite a handsome bike, but now (with addition of panniers) rides a dork-mobile. I will be laughing on the other side of my face, no doubt, after caryying my stuff on my back for a couple of days.

Sadlier Street is in fact Sadlier Crescent according to Google Maps. It's a crescent only in the very broadest definition of the term! We'll be able to visit the famous Trafalgar Street/Audley Street pothole on the way out, now thankfully filled after a month of agitation. I shall not be travelling ...
