Leonard Zinn says that the lube should be applied just before riding, so that the lubricant can use the heat of the chain in use to bond with the metal's surface.

More the condition of the sprocket, Weiyun.

As for the chain, I usually just check lateral flexibility and for frozen links.

My philosophy has been that I've left it too late when it starts to slip.

How do you check?

Are these figures right?

I do approx 250 km each week. At 3,000 km, that means a new chain every 12 weeks?

I've done 18,000 km on my last chain and cassette and it's still sweet for another two or three I reckon.

Cleaned once a week (hot water, detergent and toothbrush) and using wax lubricant.

But a great day by any measure Weyun. Thanks to you and Mike - and Peter with his traditional navigation system. It is a great thing to claim a whole day for yourself, even tho' it got a bit masochistic at times! Mike did a clanking good job riding around the highlands with a loose casette most of t...

PS. Everyone coming on the ride should carry an ICE card with emergency contact information in their jersey pocket.
As they found in the London Tube bombing, it's a good idea to have an ICE number on your mobile. That's where mine is.

Re: BSCC Single Speed Racing Sat 6th & 20th March

I've just done the maths on it and I can't do it. I'd have a problem converting my fixie to singlespeed in time for the 6th March and the 20th March clashes with the NSW Masters Scratch race.
What would you have to do Mike? I'm not sure what the specs are for 'singlespeed' in this context.

All the best guys and girls. Have a safe, fun trip. Tip: If you see sheep in the farm, make loud noise like tribal red Indians. The sheep will freak out and run away. Any rowers in the club? Umm... I've done a bit over the years. It's good to learn (and fun). Just don't let them talk you into racing  The main reason for learning to row properly is technique. Learning on a rowing machine will seldom lead to good technique and you won't maximise the benefits...

What else is helpful apart from swimming and resistance training?
Rowing (machine?) is probably the best overall. No impact, high CV, similar leg muscles plus shoulders, back, arms and CORE.

Further to Weyun's post, G, and as I said last week, you should all minimise your solar exposure as much as possible, esp for Tomas who has no natural melanin protection. Great story G. It was more like a “drown the other swimmers competition” than a triathlon. Or maybe that’s wot a triathlon is supposed to be.
