My uncle Dave rode the Grafton back in the late 80s. He was living in Grafton, doing 750 km a week training for the 6 weeks prior, but overtrained and was bedridden for three days before the race with a virus. For him it was a very long day - strong westerlies, and run in the winter back then - but ...

Sorry I didn't post a reply to this strand until now. Yes, I'm still planning to go, and can give Adrian a lift (Adrian, just let me know where to pick you up, or you could catch train to Petersham and leave from my place right near the station). I'm not sure what time I'll need to pick you up, cert...

That's a good point, Weiyun. This looks like it'd be the cheapest way to get a lower gear (as long as I don't have to get a longer-cage rear derailleur!). I stuck this graph together to compare the gear options I was thinking about. Essentially, a different cassette is a better option than a new cra...

Gearing up for the Grafton
Seeking thoughts on gear options for the Grafton. I'm currently running 53-39 chainrings with an 11-23 rear cluster, and decided on the weekend (while riding the steep side of Audley weir) that this just doesn't give me low enough gears on the hills. If I'm gonna survive the Grafton, I think I need ...

Hard-core fixie anecdotes
I was just now sniffing the musty vaults of the Sheldon Brown web empire (let us not speak of the work I have neglected), and stumbled across some interesting anecdotes from fixie converts. This guy Steve Johnson was recalling the book from Italy , spoken about in hushed tones (I imagine) among the ...

Actually, Simon rode really well in the sprint on Friday night. It was a three lapper, but the resemblance to a traditional Tempe leadout finishes right there. Those guys in Div 1 set out hard right from the gun - there's no cruisin' around at the top of the track - it's pretty much down to business...

I have much respect for Lionel - both for his former world-class track successes, and the the amount of time he currently spends helping plebs like us. He is a cornerstone of Tempe and if my attendance there and at Dunc Gray was anything like his, I'd be a much better rider. I mean no disrespect, bu...

I'm sorry guys, but I think I'll pass on this one, at least tonight. I'm riding to work at least on Tuesdays and ...

Buildin' a fixie!
It all started the day Lindsay and Mike went to a bike recycling place. Well, they found an old yellow steel road frame that they knew would be perfect for some bigger guy who'd recently mentioned wanting to build a fixie (OK, me). Well, that cold winter's night at the track, I got an early Christma...

I'm very keen to do this ride. I used to live in Grafton as a kid, on the way out of town toward the range. The ongoing problems with doping and cheating in cycling are a real shame - so many teams and individuals have been caught this year during the race. Who can tell who else in the peloton is cheating? Is it only a matter of time before each hot-n-cold stage winner, like Vino, will slip up and be caug...

Simon, I thought you said you weren't convinced of the quality of the sprinting? Your passions seemed to be quite clearly aroused by what you've seen this year. I too was super-impressed at McEwen's win the other night, which I was lucky enough to see live. I've been sad to see that in the last coup...
